Jamaica's Tourism Capital

Montego Bay, Jamaica's second city, is known as the tourist capital of Jamaica.  Known for its luxurious hotels and the busiest airport on the island, most of Jamaica's earnings from tourism is generated through the city of Montego Bay.  This fast pace touristic city which is the capital of the Parish of St. James and the second largest city in Jamaica, by measurement and by population, (after Kingston, Spanish Town and Portmore).  Wearing the name-brand as Jamaica's Tourist Capitol, it is a tourist destination packed with duty free shopping, an International Airport, a cruise line terminal and various beaches.

This city which was just a rural town, is backed by picturesque low mountains.  In 1980, Montego Bay was proclaimed Jamaica's city by act of parliament.  However, this has not meant that it has acquired any form of autonomy as it continues to be an integral part of the Parish of St. James.  Most of the coastline near Montego Bay is occupied by numerous tourist resorts, most of which are newly built, some occupying the grounds of old sugar cane plantations with some of the original buildings and mill-works still standing. 

From all of these, the most famous two are the White Witch's Rose Hall and Tryall properties, both of which now feature world-class golf courses. Montego Bay is served by Jamaica's largest airport, the Sir Donald Sangster International Airport.  Regional and several North American and European airlines run their Caribbean hub in "MoBay's" (Sangster International Airport)  These operations are designed to connect the island of Jamaica with the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada. 

South Florida's Miami and Hollywood international airports can be reached within 70 minutes from Montego Bay.  Other U.S. cities such as Charlotte, Houston, Atlanta, and Tampa can be reached by nonstop flights in less than three hours. Other locations like Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., and Chicago can be reached in under four hours.  Major europian cities such as London, Frankfurt, Berlin, Milan Hamsterdam averages ten hours.

Attractions In Montego Bay

Although being a city, the resort area of Montego Bay does not have a lot of tourist attractions inside the city.  Most tourist attractions are found outside the city; to as far as Dunns River Falls in Ocho Rios, which is east of Montego Bay, Appleton Estates, Apple Valley Plantations, Black River Safari, Lovers Leap and Ys Falls, which are south of that city, Bob Barley Museum, Culture Yard, Jamaica's National Art Gallery in Kingston which is southeast of Montego Bay.  Other attractions that benefits tourist residing in Montego Bay are the Rose Hall Great House and Greene Wood Great House.  These great houses are within thirty (30) minutes drive from Just about anywhere in Montego Bay.  There are a couple of natural attractions which are close but still outside the city. 

These are the Martha Brae River Rafting is forty five (45) minutes drive from Montego and the Rock-lands Bird Sanctuary which is about thirty (30) minutes drive from Just about anywhere in Montego Bay.  Visitors to Jamaica, on various occasions travel as far as to the town of Port Antonio which located on the northeastern shores of Jamaica in order to experience the real feel of the island.  This is usually done by a single day excursion or two to three nights stay over visits.  This intense exploration allow these persons to see the side of Jamaica which still manage to hold on its natural beauty and natural attractions.  These are Bath Fountain and Mineral Springs, coffee plantation and hiking tours of the Blue Mountains, Charles Town Maroon Village tour, Moore Town Maroon Village tour, Reich Falls Rio Grande Valley Hiking and Rafting Tour.
